We are organizing with some people from Harvard GSD a visit to the landfill where the ashes of Cambridge waste is deposited. What is seems to be an old quarry: the Landfill Wheelabrator Saugus Inc. Ash Landfill. Cambridge’s Trash is burnt in the waste incinerator plant beside it. The purpose of the visit is to make an aerial photography of the andfill. Maybe the first of a long row of aerial landfill photography? We will be using the experience and tools from PLOTS. We find specially interesting to be able to track dumping sites.

Field notes:

Working with PSDS and Lighthawk, Shannon Dosemegan and I set out for DIY aerial image mapping from the New Orleans Lakefront Airport.

We shot images with multiple cameras and logged GPS tracks.

These images were taken from a Cessna 206 with the door removed. I used a Nikon D90 and was simply holding the camera. There was a wind deflector allowing me to get over the objective a bit more making for ideal conditions.

The pilot was unable to see the objective so I used hand signals to other passengers who then advised the pilot to go left or right as gently as possible while keeping the plane level.

Visible in these maps are the step to get into the plane and the rear right tire.

There was significant albedo from the mid-day glare on the water and the sand. The brightness was reduced heavily to bring out more information and as a tradeoff some graying occurred.
The imagery was great to work with, sharp images with sufficient overlap for most of the flight lines over the State Park.
The shooting was freehand, thus dynamic distortion corrections among the input image set, but it was not a big problem in this map with the altitude and available base data.

Cartographer notes:

The project returns to a site that has been visited just as many times as any other in the Gulf region.
This project had somewhat abundant source data and more than enough ground control from base maps for map processing.

Three separate challenges with this map:
- Some color match and image adjustment needed for seamless overlay
- The imagery is somewhat sharp and showed low error tolerance when aligning adjacent areas.
- There is variance in the viewing angle from the camera, in addition to the normal horizontal movement of the image sensor during vertical aerial photography. This is because the shooting was done free hand, with no fixed camera positioning. In some cases this allowed the photographer to cover a larger extent during the two flight lines. However, each image needed unique adjustment and this increased the amount of time needed to process the map by I am estimating 50% net time. There are other trade offs of not using a clamp that are beneficial to the photography. But this is a note about the unique footprint of each image in the set.

I would like to get some back story and add information on the state beach visitors center construction site within in the map.

Field notes:

Adam Griffith, of the Program for the Study of Developed Shorelines at Western Carolina University, conducted several Gulf of Mexico aerial overflights and shared aerial imagery with the mapping project.

The flights were typical of DIY Cessna imagery collection. The Camera is held in approximate “geodata position” by a rubberized cabinet clamp. The camera operator stays quite busy though by holding the rig to dampen vibrations, shooting images, and communicating with the pilot. All this is happening with the window wide open and the plane travelling 90-150 MPH, making it quite noisy in the cabin.

Here is a great video of Stewart Long actually stitching these images together into a map in Photoshop. He later used GDAL to georectify it:
