Interest in Hidrogen Sulfide Sensing

Hello There!

I am really happy of seeing a lot of creative people involved in "citizen science". I want to join the Hydrogen Sulfide project and start it in Bogotá, Colombia. I already read the documentation, however I want to find out if you guys have some tips to start the project in a community.

Also, I have website in Spanish where I would like to link the PLOTS basic info in Spanish....can I just go and do it or do I need any especial permission (intelectual property issues)to publish PLOTS info y the website? www.cientificamente.net

Thanks a lot.

Fernando.

Hi Fernando,

Glad to hear that you've read through the documentation on H2S thus far. Have you seen some of the research notes detailing the process that people like "megan" "eustatic" "shannon" and "sara" are writing? These give a good idea of the initial part of the process. If you want to provide a bit of an idea about the project you have in mind for working on the H2S tools, we could also give you more specific ideas about process.

There are also a few people on the Public Lab listserve that have been talking about both the photostrip test and developing a sensor. Are you part of the list? If not, it would probably be helpful for you in following the conversation to join.

In terms of linking to Public Lab on your website, please feel free to do so.

Thanks, Shannon

Hey Fernando,

Great to hear you're interested in getting involved in this project! As Shannon suggests perhaps you can describe in a research note and/or a message to the mailing list the background on your interest in this? Do you have H2S problems near you?

That will help us all brainstorm how you might get up and going on this. Also we're planning a call in the near future for those working actively on this project to hear about H2S problems in New Mexico and Colorado with a community organizer out there. Perhaps that would be a good opportunity for you to meet others working on this?

Cheers,

Sara

Sara and Shannon, thanks a lot for your replies. This is the situation: As I told you in the previous comment I started a project called "cientificamente" which principal objetive is "to be a platform for citizen creation and appropiation of science". I have created a website and I start creating relevant content for it. However I do believe the backbone of this iniciative has to be a project that involves people in a "hands-on" fashion....you know..the only way to have a real social appropiation of science is by doing it. Ok, so here is where the H2S project comes in to play, since I think it could be perfect to involve a group of enthusiast citizens in the evaluation of contamination within the city. Bogotá has 8 millon people!. I imagine I can walk through some stages to push this from an idea to real thing happening:

  1. To Learn how to make and reproduce your strips sensors. (this includes of course field tests at some locations in Bogotá).
  2. Indentifying a location or area with H2S problems where a project can take place...as Sara suggested. This is easy..since the city of Bogotá hosts one of the most polluted rivers in the world "The Bogotá river". At some point the smell of low oxidation compounds is more than evident. Here you have some links to give some background of the problem. So I think I can pick some areas and try to map the H2S levels along the river.

  1. After being sure I can reproduce the strips sensors and indentyfing some potential areas for testing I can launch a challenge on the website, a challenge to involve people in testing Bogota´s river contamination and creating a map with the results.

what you think?

After reading briefly the research notes I still have some questions:

  1. Have you tried the sensors for liquid samples?
  2. How are you guys measuring the color intensity developed on the strip? How is a scale of color=concentration created?.

Thanks a loooooot! I am really excited about this and your help.

F.
